Holiday Wish List: Vehicle Gear And Equipment

Ahh yes! The traditional Jerry Can is a timeless and rugged fuel container originally designed for the German Military in the 1930s.It has been adopted and used world wide ever since. Today Anvil Off-Road, a subsidy of Holley Performance, offers the Anvil Jerry Can in four different colors; Red, Green, Yellow, and Blue. These are high-quality steel Jerry cans that hold up to 5.3 Gallons or 20 fluid liters. Each can features an internal vent, and premium spout for fast spill-free use. This unit is approved as a portable fuel container in all 50 states and is available for purchase at just under $80.

For off-roaders that are ready for action but also want to step up the bling game, we recommend you look at 4122 new billet machined hitch slider. This thing is functional and fancy. With the built-in 1-inch shackle tow point and the skid lip, it is multi-functional trail rated off-road jewelry. Is it necessary? NO! Is it totally bitchin? YES!

A similar product to the one above but at a little more manageable price point of $149, Total Chaos designed and made their Bumper Hitch Receiver Skid out of fabricated steel. This unit has a considerable amount of surface area for the skid plate. Coming from the folks at Total Chaos Fabrication, we can trust and verify it is well made and ready to protect your vehicle’s rear end on the trail.

When driving off-road, its only a matter of time before your vehicle or someone else gets hung up on the trail or just plain out buried and stuck. Off Road Xtreme recommends to always have several options to self recover. You have probably heard someone say “It is better to have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it.” That could not be more true for a pair of recover boards. They are easy to carry and work exceptionally well to get out of multiple situations. MAXTRAX Recovery Boards is the brand name selling these spiked planks and for good reason. They are damn near indestructible and for $299 a pair, they ought to last a lifetime.

Vehicle lighting upgrades are a must have for any proper off-roader. You do not want to get stuck in the dark with only standard OEM head lamps, and the night does not have cut end the fun trail adventures just because it gets dark. Lighting upgrades are a real safety benefit and when properly outfitted you may potentially increase vehicle speeds at night. They can be very pricy and there are hundreds of options.

Back in my days of high-speed desert racing, we teamed up with LightForce, another Australian company. I was constantly impressed with the product lineup. Themid-size LightForce Striker LED Driving Light Twin Pack is a very nice price for performance package. Tagged at only $475, these lightsoutperforms many larger lights. Its compact size makes it an easy install on most vehicles.

Holiday Wish List: Tools, Lights, And Sharp Pointy Things

Since this is a gear guide wish list, and all of our off-road enthusiast readers will be sharing this article and purchasing these items for their loved ones, we wanted to include some safety items. The most important item not on this list is your basic fire extinguisher. Every vehicle should carry at least one. If it is and off-road vehicle it should be properly secured. For that, we recommend the Drake Automotive Group Quick Release Fire Extinguisher Mount. I have one of these. It lives on my truck. It is a super clean design. It is easy to operate, and thankfully I have never had to use it in an emergency. It can be your for under $60.

Every trail rig needs a dedicated tool bag. Having a full kit, organized, easy to access, easy to stow away is as essential as a fire extinguisher. The BOXO KOH Tool Bag with Tool Set, and Trail Bag is a super deluxe complete setup that I have been eyeing for sometime. This thing is loaded with an 80-piece metric tool kit of professional mechanic grade and come with a solid lifetime warranty. The bag itself is stitched from high quality Cordura® Nylon to ensure your tools stay organized and rattle free. For $770, it is not an easy swallow, but BOXO is has it marked down to $539 until Tuesday, November. 30th. They also offer easy online financing to make small monthly payments. Between Black Friday and Cyber Monday they have a few other good deals right now too.

Part of my EDC essentials is a small low profile flashlight. On the day-to-day, I switch through a variety, but most are just pen lights or even smaller. The only drawback with these units is the light output. They are simply underpowered. I went searching for something about the size of a pocket knife that could light up a room. I landed on the Stiletto Pro – Multi-Output LED Flashlight. My favorite part besides the 1,000 lumens, and reversible pocket clip, is that its shape is untraditionally flat and resembles a pocket knife rather than a tube. My least favorite part is the $229 cost, but the micro-usb rechargeable battery reduces the cost of operation. I also know SureFire is trusted for producing high-quality goods that first responders and the military relies on.

With the EDC light on my hip or clipped to my pocket, my vehicle always is loaded with an additional flashlight. Beyond that, the camping supplies will get a lamp and another flashlight. You know the old saying; One is none. Two is one.” and so on. Having a good quality flashlight in the vehicle, is as important as having a good quality truck gun. I went back to SureFire and looked for the most standard small flashlight in the catalog. The G2X Pro Dual-Output LED Flashlight fit the bill. This $79 unit is the entry level hook to a SureFire customer. Once you try, you will be a returning customer.

As a former Boy Scout, I always have carried a pocket knife. I started out with your traditional folding 110 Buck Knife. They were simple and legendary and they happened to have corporate office in my local community of East County, San Diego. It lasted me an entire childhood and if I did not loose it, I probably would still use it. As I grew up, I used to pick up cheap blades that looked cool but they never lasted. One disaster after another lead me back towards investing in high-quality knives. Right now, one of the best knife manufactures is Benchmade.

When looking at their impressive lineup of blades to showcase to the Off Road Xtreme audience, we landed and the ultralight EDCBenchmade Bugout family pocket knives. Ranging in price from $175 – $300, the Bugout is a slim folding knife with Benchmade’s AXIS assisted locking technology. Choose from a plain drop-point or serrated drop-point blade and five different blade finishes and handle materials. These beauties are made in the USA and perfect for the modern outdoor adventurer. My favorite in the lineup is the all carbon fiber 535-3 Bugout.

Holiday Wish List: Coolers, Gadgets, And Power

Coolers and ice chests will always have their place. For extended off-grid expeditions and off-road camping adventures, you simply cannot beat the convenience of a small electronic portable fridge freezer. ARB 4×4 Accessories was the first to mass market these modern luxuries. Available in four sizes, 37 qt. – 82 qt, the ARB Classic Series II Fridge Freezer can haul all the groceries and drink at a controlled temperature. Melted ice, soggy bread, and spoiled food does not have to cut your fun short. This is a dream upgrade for the serious out door adventurer and prices start at just over $1,000.

We have all been there when a vehicle battery fails and it usually comes out the worst times. I have always carried jumper cables, but now a days the small battery bank and portable jump starters are where it is at. But what about big displacement trucks and diesels? TYPE S brought out the mac daddy of jump starters. TYPE S 12V 9.0L ProJump™ Jump Starter is the ultimate jump starter for any vehicle. Its ultra powerful design with 18,000 mAh power bank is capable of jump starting gas engines up to 9.0L and diesel engines up to 6.0L, providing coverage for all common vehicles on the road.

I have been using this unit specifically and can verify it is unstoppable for most likely scenarios. The fit and finish is top notch. The portable case that packages everything up is nicer than most all of my other gear. This is no overseas low cost knockoff and runs $269.99 for the big dog. TYPE S has more suitable options and lower price points depending on needs and applications.

Holiday Wish List: Overlanding Must Haves

Appropriate footwear is critical to ones comfort and mobility. This cannot be overlooked especially when venturing out into the wilderness or exploring remote off-road trails. If your ride fails you, you just might have to beat your feet to get you back on track. I once heard a very experienced outdoorsman stress the importance of proper attire. I caught on soon enough that having durable and suitable boots was the only way for me to enjoy my off-road adventures. I do not mess around and look at only premium options. At the top of my list, I found these Mountain 600 Hiking Boots by Danner fit the bill for only $190.

Danner is known for crafting top of the line durable leather hiking boots, designed with lightweight performance materials and innovative classic styling.

Water storage and dispensing is always part of the critical camp and off-road activities. Hauling water can be cumbersome and now we have awesome products like the rotopax and Anvil Jerry cans. At the 2021 SEMA Show, we found Dometic has stepped up the off-grid water container with remote running faucet package is totally a trick and clean setup. With this system, you can convert your primitive camping arrangement into the next level of sophisticated comfort.

Dometic engineers sorted this out with a highly creative and user-friendly remote battery-powered spout. The Dometic Hydration Water Faucet has a magnetic base and remote magnetic landing pads that dispense 1 liter a minute. It runs 150 liters off of one charge, auto primes, has a 1-minute cut-off, and comes with a built-in LED Light on the pour spout. The system also allows for inline filtering for a sealed ecosystem.

Primary water supply goes without saying when you are in the backcountry, but it is very much necessary to have a backup plan. Water purification on a small scale is cheap and easy to do but also tremendously valuable when needed. Grayl has been a leader in portable water purification and we thought their Covert Edition 24 oz GeoPress Water Purifier was worth a mention and also looked cool enough. For $89.95 this requires zero setup time and makes 24 fl. oz. of clean drinking water in a blazing fast 8 seconds or 5 liters a minute.

Storing valuable and essential camping gear sometimes comes at the risk of being stolen or picked off when away from your rig. We all know that if a thief wants is bad enough there is not muck we can do about that. What we can do is element the basic crime of opportunity by making something harder to steal. Enter Roam Adventure Co and their line of heavy-duty Rugged Case storage containers. Ideal for storing items such as firearms, hunting gear, spare vehicle parts, recovery equipment or just adding more storage to any vehicle, Roam has made storage easy and secure. Ranging in various sizes from 52 to 160 liters prices start at $200. The Molle panels, the lid organizer attachments, and quickfist clamping accessories make these Rugged Cases even more useful.

When out camping or off-roading, it is important to stay organized. With limited room and storage, everything that comes along with you should be an essential or a wanted item. Each of these items should have a home which makes them easy to find. Step 22 Gear specializes in high-quality gear organizers. One of their most popular items is the large Stingray Flatbox.

Holiday Wish List: Off-Road Cooking Upgrades

When you are out camping, off-grid, or out on the trail, you still need to eat. These days there are so many options that making cooking easy and fun. You can keep it simple by cooking dogs over an open fire or you can take advantage of the modern conveniences brought to us through innovation and problem solving.

The most unique mobile cooking system I have seen in a long time has to be the Nomad Grill & Smoker. This is a portable charcoal barbecue grill made from lightweight aluminum construction. The main feature is that it folds open for a large cooking space and then folds up into a compact carrying case when done. It holds a hefty price tag at $599.

Another cooking unit that offers extremely versatility for around town activities such as tailgating, and outings to the park but still portable and rugged enough for the trails is the HitchFire Gorge 15 BBQ. Out of the box, this thing sets up and installs right to your vehicle hitch in minutes. Also not cheap, but after using one for the last several months, I would feel comfortable chewing on the $549 cost.

We found this more traditional setup at the 2021 SEMA Show. The ikamper Disco Series Outdoor Cooking Station features extreme versatility, super compact portability, and offered multiple cooking configurations. Just maybe the perfect camping cooking set for your next adventure, the Disco comes complete with the Skillet, Tripod, Stove, and Table. Currently on kickstarter with $100 off the purchase price, this is a little easier to swallow at $490.
